Te-Anau to Dunedin

Te-Anau was just a place to rest our heads for the night, not much to see other than the glorious lake. A playground was promised and was delivered. Jeff does a workout and pays up on a lost 50 push up bet before hanging out with Bailey on the castle/rocket ship (it's hard to keep up). After Courts nearly concusses herself on the rocket ship, we pack our bags and head to a Cafe for breakfast (scone of the day: Cheese), then hit the road again.

We're off to Dunedin for a few nights and this will be one of our longer drives, about 3.5 hours. We make a couple of stops along the way including lunch; Subway for Jeff (there's an unusual amount of these in some of the smaller towns) and the usual staple of pies and sandwiches for the rest of the gang.

We arrive in Dunedin mid arvo. Dunedin is known as a university town and our friend Johanna actually went to Uni here! She's takes us on a bit of tour of the campus and dormitories she used to live in. It's a Saturday and there's a group of students lounging on the front lawn in front of the dorms, having a few drinks. There's a very American college vibe here.

We head to nearby Baldwin street: The Steepest Street in the World!

We drop off our bags at the airbnb and Courts and Jeff hit the town. We head to the Octagon in the centre of town where we're expecting to find the action. We do. It's about 5pm and the bars are starting to fill up. We find a bar just off the octagon action strip. It's Scottish themed and theyre serving hand poured luke warm beers on tap. They go down surprisingly easily.

After a couple of pints here we head to a bar/restaurant who said they'll put the AFL on the TV as long as there is no other game on. It's an preliminary final so we're not sure what other game could be more important. We're in luck! A rugby game has just finished so every TV in the place is switched to the footy. We settle in for some food and jugs of beer. Throughout the evening we notice groups of mid-20 year olds coming through with various medals, trophies and general ruckus. We stop one and ask what's happening and find out there's a field hockey tournament being held, which the girls have one. Hence the celebrations.

After a nail biting finish in the footy we head back to the octagon. Caleb has joined us by this point. We wander into a bar that has some live music and have a beer and a boogie. The musician packs up and a DJ takes over. It's a bit jarring so hop on over to a bar a few doors down. This one also has a guy singing and playing guitar, a nice common theme here. More beers and a boogie and Courts encroaches on a nearby group of girls who look like they're having a blast. Courts gets chatting and finds out these girls were also playing in the field hockey comp that was being hosted here. The boys head to the casino and Courts decides to stay with her new found friends and see if she can join the team.

The casino is very schmick. One of the nicer ones Jeff has seen. There is another live guitarist playing bangers (e.g. MGMT) in the corner. $5 blackjack with spare seats. Unheard of!

Courts has joined the boys again by this time. Her new friends were kicking on at another club with a massive line up, so she decided to leave them to it. The gang stumbles home to pass out.
