Cape Town, South Africa - City Centre, Bo-Kaap

Today is the first day of our trip where we don't have anything on the agenda. Since the day we stepped off the plane in Vic Falls, it's been all systems go.

We have a good sleep in, then meander into the city centre. The only plan for today is to see what this city's all about.

We head to a Cafe called Lattitide 33 for breakfast. As it's closer to lunch than breakfast, we decide to order both. We have 4 breakfasts between us and a couple of coffees. Grand total of $25 - that's our kind of brunch.

Next, we head to Bo-Kaap, a community made up of mostly Muslims. Historically this area has been one of the most multicultural in Cape Town - owned by the government, housed by ex-slaves and immigrants. Eventually properties were bought by the residents and maintenance duties were theirs. They proudly painted the houses bright colours and continue to do so every year after Ramadan. It has survived attempts to bulldoze the area by developers due to its historic significance, but gentrification remains a growing issue.

We spend a bit more time wandering around the city. The most well known street in this city is Long street. It's very similar to Hindley street with all its clubs and pubs. If you go a few streets over, you'll find Bree street, an up and coming trendy street, lined with cafes and hip bars.

Along our travels through a market type street Jeff is stopped by a guy who tells him his bag is partly unzipped and suggests he zips it up, as a safety precaution. As a thanks, the guy asks if we wouldn't mind buying him some weetbix and milk, he doesn't have any money and his family's hungry. We're inclined to believe him seeing as he's actually asking for food, as opposed to a lot of people in the city who just ask for money. Plus he said the magic word (in Jeff's book) weetbix. The guy leads us to a nearby shop and Jeff makes the requested purchases.

Exploring is thirsty work, so we park up at a bar which offers good craft beers and spend the remainder of the afternoon people watching and playing cards.

Now that we've worked up our appetite it's time for dinner. We've had our sights set on a Mexican restaurant, El Burro. We aren't dissapointed. Authentic Mexican food, this place ticks all the boxes. We roll back to the loft which isn't far and pass out.
